Our Grocery Store

This is one of two grocery stores in our little town. Actually there are several "Mom & Pop" grocery stores on our main street, but we never shop there,..that's sad I guess, but this store carries all the basics (beef, chicken, lots of seafood, dairy, and veggies) plus the usual Japanese food items that we have come to appreciate and love.

Steph's 2nd Birthday Party!

Reverend Yoshida and his wife now live in a town called Tono. It's about 30 minutes from here. On Easter Sunday (one week ago today), Steph and I went to the church that he and his wife will be attending from now on. It was the second time for us to go there since Rev. Yoshida retired. We plan on going to their new church every other week until we leave Japan. We have to because we would just miss them too much!
We were surprised and happy to have also met a new English teacher that had just come to Japan only 3 weeks ago. Her name is Teresa and she is from Tennessee. I think she was pretty happy to meet some Christian foreigners. The Yoshida's had planned to have me and Steph over to their new home for a birthday celebration for Steph and since Teresa was new here they asked if she would like to come along.
Mrs Yoshida baked a homemade cheesecake for Steph... It was delicious!
Mrs. Yoshida made a handbag for Steph BY HAND! And, without a sewing machine! This is actually the third beautiful handbag that she has made for Steph. She lined the inside of this bag with material from a dress that was her mother's.
Mrs. Yoshida is explaining a traditional Japanese game that she also gave Steph
Mrs. Yoshida, Teresa and Steph
Me and Rev. Yoshida talked about theology for about two hours. I love to talk to him.

People just can't help but love Steph. Hee hee.
I was a beautiful day,...we are so blessed.

Crazy Martian Dance
Naoko's Amazing Calligraphy the Beautiful Bouquet that Steph's friends presented to her

On Saturday, April 15th, Steph's very close friends from her women's English conversation circles threw her a birthday party! It was really amazing! These women love Steph so much and have treated her like a queen over the past 2 and a half years.

They threw the party at Kayo's home/restaurant ---Kayo is one of the ladies who studies English with Steph ...her home and restaurant is a really cool place. In the inside there are all kinds of books and art and always cool music playing in the background. Kayo is an amazing woman too (she is a jazz lover/singer, stained-glass artist and chef).

Mutsuko, Stephanie's dearest friend and our mother here in Japan, baked a chocolate and Hello Kitty cake fror Steph (just what Steph would want). And everyone brought delicious homemade dishes...sooooo good! You can see a pic of marinated sashimi salmon wrapped arounnd fresh vegetables with cashew and walnut cream cheese. There was so much food!

Naoko, one of Steph's friends that is a professional calligrapher made her beautiful signs and a card with a poem (She even made one for me too)!

All of Steph's friends wrote poems and sang songs for her...then they performed this crazy martian-themed dance for her as a grand finale---check out the costumes they made by hand!

Steph (and myself) were so overwhelmed! These wonderful ladies you see here have been and are angels to us!

Pretendin' to be famous

Along time ago I mentioned to my friend that I had a desire to do a recital here in Japan. She thought it sounded like a good idea and we talked casually about it off and on for about a year. Then one day she mentioned it to another friend, who is a musician we have sung with at some local festivals. He thought it sounded like a good idea too......Now it has turned in to a huge event to promote International friendship! There will be some local musicians performing and a group from Osaka coming in to perform too. The organizer of the event chose the closing song to be We Are the World and the committe had the idea to ask other foreigners to come on stage to sing along with us and our friends that we have made here in Japan too and all the bands that are performing. I think it should be a really fun concert! It's fun to be a foreigner in rural Japan because sometimes we get a chance to be in the spot light and it's a real honor!

Zaru Soba

On Saturday, Steph and I went to one of our favorite onsens (hot spring) for a soak in a hot spring and then had zaru soba at the restaurant there. We were starting our celbration of Steph's B-day (Steph didn't want to celebrate on Good Friday and I thought that was honorable of her).

Shall we have a look?

Ramen

The Sunday before last we went to a new church. Rev. Yoshida, the man on the left, retired recently and he and his wife moved from our church parsonage to another town and are now attending a different church not too far away. So, we went with them for their first time (in 40 years) to attend church as memebers and not leaders.

Afterwards, Rev. Yoshida treated us to miso ramen(pronounced "rahmen"). It was a huge bowl of miso soup with lots of noodles and veggies...soooooo good!

We are going to attend the Yoshida's new church every other Sunday and we'll be going this Easter Sunday. we are invited to their new house afterward so maybe I post some pics later...

Easter Cookies

Steph made Easter cookies for church the other day...really cute! This will be something new for our church.

EXTRA! EXTRA!

Hey ya'll,
Steph made it into two newspapers recently. At the top you can see shots of her most recent story. It was an interview which basically covered all the activities that Steph does here in Japan (concerts, Kindergarten teaching, and her Ladie's English Circle).
Here at the bottom are photos from another story about her doing tea ceremony at the Kindergarten for Hinamatsuri (this one ran about a month ago).

My Handwriting

We had our Graduation on March 3rd. In Japan they always play "Auld Lang Syne" (the song we sing at midnight on New Year's Eve in America) Anyway, the top picture is of the song on a handout and the bottom is of me actually writing the song out in only simple Japanese hiragana characters so that I could read it. Just thought you might be interested to see a sample of my bad Japanese. Steph can write all these too by the way!

Makin' Noodles

Steph and the ladies at church made Udon Noodles back in February. I forgot to post the pictures...enjoy!

Also, if you want to know what UDON is, Click Me.

The Dinner Guest

Hey Everyone! The weather is really getting nice here. It is still cold and we are having occasional snow flurries but it is definitely getting warmer! The sun is shining and the rice fields are being fertilized for planting! Also this time of year, as Gabe mentioned in the previous post, there are a lot of office parties. This past week one of Gabe's co-workers retired and we had a small farewell dinner with some other teachers. It was at a really nice restaurant famous for sushi. We had some great dishes, like sashimi, tempura and hoya (sea pineapple). Hoya is rare even in Japan. In fact it is special to the area that we live. When fresh it is delicious. The food was served in courses. As we finished one dish another was brought in. Here is a picture of one of the final dishes served!
It looks scary but was actually delicious. It was a salt grilled fish, half a head and small piece of the body. I watched the others eat most of the head, including the eye! I didn't eat too much of the head, but I was pretty proud of myself for at least picking around it! I will spare you all the photo that Gabe took after he ate off of his head...I'll just say this, it looked like a flesh eating bug had taken over a very angry looking fish! Here are some pics of us instead, inside the restaurant.
